NEW OFFICIAL TIPS - Mistakes
I would hope that all officials, both new and seasoned, would take a moment and download this FREE guide from The National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) and www.Referee.com.
TIP #1 - YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES - Sometimes they are dreadful mistakes, but we must accept them as an environmental hazard in an avocation that calls for us to make a multitude of split-second decisions under very stressful conditions. To expect perfection is too heavy a burden for any person to carry and ultimately will take the joy out of officiating for even the best official.
Unfortunately this is a reality of sports officiating. Mistakes are inevitable, but this does not mean that we have to strive for mediocrity. Running down the court and telling the coach you made a mistake should not become the norm. We should strive for the best position to make credible calls. Our judgment can also be improved with better understanding of the rules and case book plays. Strive for perfection, but forgive yourself as you come up short. Now go blow that whistle and have some fun!
